Harrogate show hit by hotel blaze

Harrogate Home & Gift organisers, Clarion, is assessing the impact of the fire that erupted at the Majestic Hotel in the early hours of Wednesday 5th May.

Firefighters were called at 5am to tackle the blaze on the upper floors of the hotel, forcing the emergency evacuation of guests and staff. It took seven hours to extinguish the blaze, with damage caused to the fourth and fifth floors as well as the Grand Dining Room and Ballroom. One body has been recovered, believed to be that of a hotel worker.

The 110 year old Majestic Hotel is at the heart of the show and as well as providing vital accommodation also hosts other elements of the exhibition.

“We are saddened to learn of the fire which took place at The Majestic Hotel in Harrogate in the early hours of  Wednesday 5 May," said a Clarion spokesperson. "At this stage our thoughts go out to the hotel staff, its owners and the guests who have been affected.

It is too early to say what, if any, impact this will have on Home & Gift in July. However, as we find out more we will communicate this directly to companies who may be affected by these events and also through our website.”

We will be working with all the appropriate authorities in the coming weeks to ensure that any decisions we make will be in the best interests of our customers, both in terms of their safety during the show as well as their ability to trade.”
