Clinton tests contactless payment system
Clinton Cards, the UK’s largest specialist retailer of greeting cards and related products has become the latest business in the UK to go contactless in partnership with RBS WorldPay. The new contactless payment option will initially be available across 50 Clinton Cards stores in London and Liverpool from November onwards.
The Visa payWave contactless technology enables consumers to simply touch the reader with their cards and pay in less than a second. The technology is expected to help reduce queues especially during peak periods, such as lunchtime and seasonal trading.
The contactless payment service provided by RBS WorldPay and Visa Europe will offer Clinton Cards’ customers an alternative option that is faster than existing methods such as cash, with transactions of up to £15 taking less than a second with a simple touch of the card on the contactless reader. RBS WorldPay research shows 76% of retailers see card technology as being a cost effective, efficient and secure payment method for smaller transactions.
Currently, an estimated third of all in-store transactions at Clinton Cards are made using chip and PIN payment terminals, with 150 card transactions per store on average during lunch time, a figure which increases during seasonal periods such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Using contactless technology, the time spent making these transactions will be significantly reduced.
Robert Brown Group EPOS System Manager comments: “The contactless system is very suitable for our business, as the vast majority of transactions are under £15. As the contactless system provides a faster transaction time for any payment up to £15, it will allow us to tend to a greater number of customers, which will be invaluable during peak shopping times. It will also help customers who feel uncomfortable paying by chip and PIN for small amounts when there are people waiting behind them at the checkout.”
Matt Rowsell, Head of Business Development at RBS WorldPay comments: “RBS WorldPay is pleased to support Clinton Cards in providing them with a payment service which is both fast and secure and will support their staff during busy trading periods. The latest implementation is reflective of RBS WorldPay’s ongoing dedication to providing innovative payment solutions to retailers.”
Mark Austin, Head of Contactless, Visa Europe commented: “This partnership is the latest milestone for contactless payment acceptance in the UK. We remain committed to the rollout of Visa payWave to match the ever increasing uptake of Visa contactless cards by British consumers.”
