Janna earns licence to pitch

Publishers Deckled Edge one of just two finalists at BLE License This! competition

DECKLED Edge have made it to this year’s License This! finals, where artist Janna Cossettini's work will battle it out at Brand Licensing Europe next week for the big prize.

The greetings publishers are one of just two on the shortlist who will be pitching their property in front of a live audience to the panel of expert judges on Thursday, October 12, the final day of the three-day at London’s Olympia.
Devon-based Janna (pictured) will be up against Spanish children’s brand Ioguis at the Licensing Acedemy Theatre at UBM’s pan-European event dedicated to licensing and brand extension where the competition run by the UK Licensing Industry Manufacturers’ Association is aimed at giving unlicensed brand and image owners the opportunity to enter the market, currently worth £199.2billion ($262.9bn) globally.
This year’s judges are LIMA UK MD Kelvyn Gardner, Sam Ferguson from Jazwares, JELC’s Jane Evans, Danilo’s Dan Grant, and Clare Piggot from Larkshead Media, and they picked Deckled Edge and Ioguis from the numerous international entries as finalists, and will choose the overall winner following the presentations.
“License This! improves every year,” said Kelvyn. “The success of previous entrants, and not just the winners, is encouraging wider participation, with everything from digital media concepts through art and design and even a brand or two now. This sets a challenge for the judges, almost comparing apples and oranges, but it’s a fascinating process and this year’s finalists have great merit.”
Danilo licensing director Dan added: “I was privileged to be part of the judging panel for the License This! competition for the first time this year, not really knowing what to expect I was impressed by the variety and quality of the submissions that were presented to us.
“There were some really interesting concepts put forward and I think we managed to select a good range of finalists that cross different areas of the licensing world.
“One of the things that impressed me most was the fact that there was representation from around the world, which really reflects the reach of this competition, BLE and licensing as an industry.
“This is such a great competition for those people looking to get into licensing and I would encourage anyone else considering this competition next year to go for it, as you never know what it might lead to. Best of luck to the finalists.”
Jane – who was one of the judges last year and signed I Like Birds to her licensing agency following their appearance in the finals – said: “I was surprised by the variety of concepts submitted and the geographical diversity, and the fact that the finalists are very different is a great reflection of the scope of the licensing industry.”
Deckled Edge specialise in greetings cards, giftwrap and art prints with horse fan Janna finding a niche in country living and equestrian designs, expanding her range to include horse and rider, rosettes, horseshoes, farm animals, unicorns, merhorses, tractors and even dinosaurs.
Designed to encourage children to learn how to handle emotions and habits through yoga, the Ioguis brand has illustrated stories of five friends who meet a yoga master who teaches them the philosophy of the discipline through games, postures and wisdom.
Brand Licensing Europe is the definitive event for the licensing industry in Europe and takes place from Tuesday to Thursday, October 10-12.
